Thomas Mertz

Project manager, producer and agent of chaos.

About me

My name is Thomas, and I am a project manager, producer and programmer. Not always in that order.

I build things for the internet, and have slowly segwayed into building things in the real world too – mostly entertainment experiences and cultural events. I’ve worked on numerous festivals, immersive experiences and larps throughout the years.

I started my career in tech support, and taught myself to code. I am a digital native, and grew up using the internet. To say that it permeates every aspect of my life is a gross understatement.

Work Experience

Head of IT

  • Planned and put into production new tools and processes to reduce workload and increase efficiency, automating workflows and ultimately saving the organisation thousands of man hours every year.
  • Designed and implemented several software applications that greatly streamlined the production of the festival, unifying the experience of market vendors, performers, volunteers and other contributors.
  • Planned and executed plans for infrastructure, cybersecurity and live stream productions for our annual festival with more than 65.000 guests.
  • Lead the change process to clean up four decades of volunteer-built software and production processes, migrating the organisation into Google Workspace, and reducing SPOFs within the organisational structure.

WordPress Developer and Project Manager

  • I operate as a competency boost to existing teams, strengthening where needed. I supply everything from coaching and guidance to rapid prototyping workshops, and long term projects, working in close proximity with internal teams and my clients other external partners.
  • Planning and execution of scalable and highly available hosting setups (aka DevOps for hire).
  • Client list includes Bombardier Inc., Roskilde Festival, Beam Berlin GmbH, Lund & Bendsen, Industriens Uddannelser, Røde Kors, Reto Moto, Royal Beer, Red Barnet, Bastard Cafe, Three Little Monsters and Endava.

Operations Manager

  • Managed the event operations department, consisting of 34 members across 13 countries.
  • Reviewed existing processes, identified pain and problem points and led the change process to optimise the organisation, including optimising production workflows and reviewing budgets.
  • Coordinated work between three international teams each working on connected events throughout the United Kingdom, Poland and Germany.
  • Facilitated creative workshops, aligning the creative narrative of all three events and ensured the teams stayed in sync throughout their individual production timelines.

Release Manager

  • Working with in-house and external developers to ensure high quality mobile games were brought to market, growing the platform from 4 million MAU to 65 million MAU.
  • Managing production processes and pipeline, coordinating with internal stakeholders such as our marketing and graphics departments, while ensuring developers stay on track, and coordinating with our external QA partners.
  • Singlehandedly managed the release pipeline of more than 26 titles, published across 7 channels (iOS, Google Play, Galaxy Apps, Weibo, Facebook, Facebook Instant and our own online portal), for a total of 182 SKUs.

Senior Concept Developer

  • Originally hired to develop and manage the agencys digital operations, I quickly migrated onto the creative team.
  • Worked closely with our creative director to develop multichannel campaign concepts.
  • Developed, planned and executed pitches to clients
  • And also the source of my brief, but incredibly fun, modelling career.

Network Support Specialist

  • Collaborated with the network operations center to design and launch a scalable architecture; the resulting infrastructure improvements supported a 50% increase in data handling capability without sacrificing performance.
  • Responded to customer support requests via email, telephone and on-site visits.
